Rating Products: Nutrition & Carbon Impact

Our methodology evaluates products on two fronts—nutritional quality and environmental impact—so you can make more informed choices that benefit both your health and the planet.

1. Nutritional Quality – Nutri-Score

We use the Nutri-Score system, a science-based system that assesses both negative nutrients (such as calories, sugars, saturated fats, and sodium) and positive nutrients (including protein, fibre, fruit/veg/, and nut content, as well as healthy oils). The result is a rating from A (healthiest) to E (least healthy):

  • Grade A – Highest Nutritional Quality
Rich in fruits, vegetables, fibre, protein, and healthy oils; low in sugars, saturated fats, and sodium.
  • Grade B – Good Nutritional Quality
Favourable nutrient balance, with slightly higher levels of less healthy components.
  • Grade C – Average Nutritional Quality
Balanced mix of favourable and less favourable nutrients.
  • Grade D – Lower Nutritional Quality
Higher sugars, saturated fats, or sodium, with fewer beneficial nutrients.
  • Grade E – Lowest Nutritional Quality
Highest levels of sugars, saturated fats, or sodium, and minimal beneficial nutrients.

2. Environmental Impact – Carbon Footprint Rating

Alongside nutrition, we measure a product’s carbon intensity—its greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram—using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data. This encompasses every stage, from farm production to processing, packaging, transportation, consumption, and end-of-life.

Products receive an A–E rating based on their carbon intensity:

  • A-rated products align with the EAT-Lancet Commission’s per-person food carbon budget, designed to keep global warming below 2 °C in line with the Paris Agreement.
  • Ratings B to E represent progressively higher carbon intensities.

This system helps you compare foods fairly, even across different portion sizes. Importantly, it’s not about avoiding higher-carbon foods altogether, but about understanding their impact—helping you reduce your overall footprint by choosing lower-emission options when possible.

The Rating Boundaries

  • Step illustration
Food in this category is produced within the planetary boundary for greenhouse gas emissions for food production.
  • Step illustration
The B/C boundary is 1.75 times higher than the A/B boundary.
  • Step illustration
The C/D boundary is 3 times higher than the A/B boundary.
  • Step illustration
The D/E boundary is 5 times higher than the A/B boundary.
  • Step illustration
Any food product with a carbon footprint more than 5x higher than the A/B boundary is rated E.

Assigning PlanetPoints

PlanetPoints reward you for making healthier and more sustainable food choices.
Your points are calculated based on the carbon and nutrition rating of each item you buy.

Both ratings matter — a low score in either reduces your points, and an E rating in carbon or nutrition means no points.

How it works

  • 🟢 A-rated products: Earn 3 points per £
  • 🟡 B-rated products: Earn 2 points per £
  • 🟠 C-rated products: Earn 1 point per £
  • 🔴 D-rated products: Earn 0.5 points per £
  • E-rated products: Earn 0 points per £

Points are based on both the carbon and nutrition rating of what you buy. If either rating is an E, you earn no points for that item.

The Formula

PlanetPoints are calculated as:

Points = Price × [(CarbonMultiplier × NutritionMultiplier) ÷ 0.75] × R

Where:

  • CarbonMultiplier and NutritionMultiplier use the scale above (A=3, B=2, C=1, D=0.5, E=0).
  • R = 2 for linked POS/bank card purchases, 1 for receipt-scan.
  • Bonus = double your total if you shop at a Partnered Outlet.
  • If either rating = E (0), your base points are zero before any bonus.

This means the very best products (A/A) earn 12 PlanetPoints per £ spent.

Receipt scans earn the standard rate. Partnered outlets double your total.

Example

  • £10 purchase with A-rated carbon and B-rated nutrition:
    → £10 × (3 × 2 ÷ 0.75) = 80 PlanetPoints
If at a Partnered Outlet, that doubles to 160 PlanetPoints.

Why this matters

PlanetPoints align personal rewards with positive impact. By combining carbon and nutrition, we nudge healthier, lower-impact choices while rewarding your everyday spending.

The better both ratings, the more PlanetPoints you earn.

Take a look at the examples below to see how this works in action at partnered outlets:

Coronation Chicken Sandwich

Carbon: 4.1 kg CO₂e/kg → C

Nutrition: C

Price: £4.95

Calc: £4.95 × [(1 × 1) ÷ 0.75] × 2 = £4.95 × 1.333… × 2 = 13.2 → 13 PlanetPoints

Mixed Berry Overnight Oats

Carbon: 1.75 kg CO₂e/kg → A

Nutrition: → B

Price: £5.50

Calc: £5.50 × [(3 × 2) ÷ 0.75] × 2 = £5.50 × 8 × 2 = 88 → 88 PlanetPoints

Beef Lasagne

Carbon: 11.3 kg CO₂e/kg → E

Nutrition: → C

Price: £7.10

Calc: E in carbon = 0 PlanetPoints

Data Accuracy

As product carbon footprinting is still relatively new, we provide an accuracy level for each item's value. The methodology for this can be found here. As a climate transparency platform, we encourage brands to conduct accurate carbon calculations through our best-in-class carbon accounting partners and invite them to join our climate transparent community.
