Journey to better data (3)

Rating Products

We work with our fantastic partners to provide every food and drink product with a carbon footprint value. To do this, we use Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions from food throughout its life: from production on the farm to processing, packaging, and transportation, through to consumption and end-of-life.

We then categorise foods using A-E ratings according to their ‘carbon intensity’ (carbon emissions per kilogram of food produced). This makes it easier to compare products which may be served in different portion sizes.

These A-E rating boundaries are allocated according to the global population's food carbon budget of 5 gigatonnes of CO2e per year. The EAT-Lancet Commission set this budget to help limit global warming to less than 2°C, in line with the Paris Agreement. Based on this, we use an individual daily carbon intensity allowance, which ‘A’ rated foods align to.

This does not mean you have to avoid foods with higher carbon footprints altogether. Knowing and understanding the impact that different foods have on the climate simply helps to guide you towards lower emission options and contribute to reductions in your overall carbon footprint.

The Rating Boundaries

  • Step illustration
Food in this category is produced within the planetary boundary for greenhouse gas emissions for food production.
  • Step illustration
The B/C boundary is 1.75 times higher than the A/B boundary.
  • Step illustration
The C/D boundary is 3 times higher than the A/B boundary.
  • Step illustration
The D/E boundary is 5 times higher than the A/B boundary.
  • Step illustration
Any food product with a carbon footprint more than 5x higher than the A/B boundary is rated E.

Assigning PlanetPoints

Using the letter ratings, we can then reward you with PlanetPoints based on two factors:

1. The price of the product

2. The product's carbon footprint

This means that PlanetPoints works just like any other rewards scheme (Tesco Clubcard, Avios etc.), except we now prioritise and encourage more sustainable purchases.

First, we give each carbon footprint letter rating its own multiplication factor. We then multiply the price by this value to get the overall PlanetPoints for the product.

  • A-rated products = 3x points per £ spent
  • B-rated products = 2x points per £ spent
  • C-rated products = 1x points per £ spent
  • D-rated products = 0x points
  • E-rated products = 0x points

The final step is to round down the end value to the nearest whole number.

Take a look at the examples below to see how this works in action:

Partner logo

Coronation Chicken Sandwich

Carbon Footprint: 4.1 kg CO2e per kg = C-rated (x1)

Price: £4.95

4.95*1 = 4.95 = 4 PlanetPoints

Partner logo

Mixed Berry Overnight Oats

Carbon Footprint: 1.75 kg CO2e per kg = A-rated (x3)

Price: £5.50

5.50*3 = 16.50 = 16 PlanetPoints

Partner logo

Beef Lasagne

Carbon Footprint: 11.3 kg CO2e per kg = E-rated (x0)

Price: £7.10

7.10*0 = 0 PlanetPoints

Data Accuracy

As product carbon footprinting is still relatively new, we provide an accuracy level for each item's value. The methodology for this can be found here. As a climate transparency platform, we encourage brands to conduct accurate carbon calculations through our best-in-class carbon accounting partners and invite them to join our climate transparent community.
