Peatland Restoration Projects

  • The magic of peatlands

Approximately 20% of Scotland’s landmass is made up of peatlands and they have a crucial role to play in the way we tackle climate change and biodiversity loss in Scotland. Currently 80% of them are in a degraded state and are a substantial source of carbon emissions. Restoration brings almost immediate benefits, at scale. Within a few months, carbon emissions are reduced by up to three tonnes per hectare annually, and peatland’s natural role of absorbing carbon is restored. A wonderful habitat is provided for native flowers and wildlife, water catchments are naturally filtered and local, green economy jobs are created.

Project details

Developed over a number of phases, Allt Achadh na Sine represents one of the most established and successful peatland restoration sites in Scotland. Situated on Lochrosque Estate, winners of Scottish Land & Estates Helping it Happen Awards 2019 for conservation, this project transformed a bare, actively eroding expanse into an impressive wetland. Dragonflies and Golden Plover have returned to the area and water retention on the hill has risen dramatically. Incorporating the restoration of drained haggs and gullies along with over 15ha of bare peatland, the site represents a flagship project demonstrating world class techniques.

  • Site name: Allt Achadh na Sine

  • Location: Achnasheen, Wester Ross

  • Project emissions reduction: (tCO2e): 87,104 units*

  • Project length: 100 years

  • Accreditation: The Peatland Code

The project is covered by a detailed monitoring plan, safeguarding the delivery of expected carbon reductions whilst also ensuring a myriad of co-benefits are realised.
A variety of wildlife has returned to the area in numbers including beetles, Greenshanks and the enigmatic Golden Plover. The site is a drinking water catchment area with Scottish Water being a key stakeholder on this project. Support and strong communications throughout ensured a positive relationship and clear co-benefits were identified through a reduction in dissolved organic carbon (brown water). There are also hydro interests on the site and anecdotal evidence indicates that the site maintains power generation over a substantially longer period post a rainfall event due to the slowing of runoff Ongoing engagement with local universities, research bodies, schools and NGOs has also ensured that the project is viewed positively in the surrounding area.

This project supports three SDG's

  • Increase in biodiversity (nesting birds and invertebrates)
  • Water quality - recognised by Scottish Water
  • Improved hydro power generation
